Belated Awards galore and some ‘penance’ facts about me.

It’s almost the end of the year, and I’ve decided that I can’t go into 2013 without acknowledging all the awards which have been lurking in one of my files. The generous and faithful bloggers who passed them on, have probably forgotten that they even awarded them to me, but I want to assure them that I haven’t forgotten, and every day, my guilty conscience has been niggling me.

Now my conscience is somewhat salved, but I’m afraid that the rules and regulations are all a bit much for me to deal with. As much as I’m honoured and grateful to receive awards, I think I’ll pass on accepting any more, unless they involve chocolate, diamonds or round the world air tickets. 🙂

As it’s the end of the year, I’ve decided to have a ‘closing down sale’ and let you all choose which awards you haven’t yet got and would like. If you’re still missing a star for the BOTY 2012, now’s your chance. 🙂  All my followers have blogs which I absolutely love, and follow as best as I can. All I ask is that you please visit some of the above-mentioned bloggers, if you haven’t come across them already.

I’m amazed that you’ve read down this far, so before I head out of this post, I will tell you a few random and fascinating things about myself, some of which you can’t possibly know. This is my penance for sitting on these lovely awards for so long. 🙂

I have two small scars on my face, both from when I was about nine-years-old. The one on my forehead, happened when I was running to school, and tripped over, hitting my head on a drain pipe. The other one,  just under my lower lip is from when I was helping my mom clean the house and couldn’t get the two metal poles on the vacuum cleaner apart so I could put it away. I tugged and tugged, and eventually they did give, but one came up and went straight through my lip. Owee!! Talking of scars, I have quite a long white scar on my left thigh from when I broke my femur and had to have a metal pin put in my leg. A year later, it had healed, but then it was time to take the pin out, so my leg got opened up again. I had a marvelous surgeon, and apart from the faint scar, you would never know.

I used to wish that I’d been born with dark brown hair instead of blonde, but as I got older and saw that brunettes get grey hairs quite early on, I changed my mind. 😉

I will always choose savoury rather than sweet, even though my sister has nicknamed me “The Dessert Queen” because I provide decadent desserts when we visit her for lunch. My favourite non-alcolholic drink is a Chai Latte from Starbucks, and I’m rather addicted to their mozzarella, sun-dried tomato and basil pesto Panini. My favourite salad is blue cheese, pear, pecan and rocket, drizzled with balsamic reduction.

I am part English, part Dutch and part Indonesian, born and brought up in England. I emigrated to South Africa in 1970, together with my darling husband, and our baby daughter. Our son was born in South Africa, but now lives in New York. I have five gorgeous grandchildren whose ages range from 22 months to 17 years.

I started blogging in October 2009 on a South African blog site, and when it went pear-shaped, I moved to WordPress in January this year. I’m so glad I did, because I’ve really enjoyed making friends with so many wonderful people here from all over the world. Love you all.

  1. Dear ad,
I am still catching up on my reading. Congratulations on all your well-deserved awards. I love to read all the fun facts about you! Happy Valentine’s Day!

  3. I didn’t know there were that many awards existing, but if someone is worthy of them – it’s you! You have been my inspiration from the start, and you are the true “queen of blogging” I would say. You have it all, and everything comes so natural to you. The writing, the sharing, the fun, the interest and the childish being curious that we all need to stay “alive”. Keep going and we will follow!

    Winter hugs from me

  4. Congratulations – much deserved! I see you handle the awards much like I do, letting them build up until the required post is a mammoth task. So glad I’m not alone 🙂
Yes, we did read it all – why so surprised? If I’d gotten scars due to cleaning, it would certainly have put me off for life. I got badly burned on a stove when very young and firmly use that as my excuse for not wanting to cook.

    • Thanks so much, Susan. Yes, when it comes to awards, I apply the Mark Twain maxim, “Never put off till tomorrow, what you can do the day after tomorrow.” 😀
I was a victim of child labour and have the scars to prove it. 🙂

  5. and they are all well deserved .. I love your blog and can see why you are awarded all of them… you have outstanding photos of such diverse places, you meet every challenge, you comment where ever I go, you are always there for everyone, you have a great sense of humour, a marvelous way of writing, you stand in shorts and a tee shirt in the snow and you live part time in South Africa…. I think someone should give you diamonds… how do I tell your Husband that.????

  6. Congrats on all those awards! (I thought the pics would never end) 😀

Thanks for sharing those things about yourself – it’s always interesting to hear ‘a little bit more’ 😉

I’ve been VERY slack with awards and don’t even know where to start… 😯

  7. Congratulations and I LOVE this post! Live how you put all the awards together, love how you said you’d only accept diamonds, and most of all love the end where you tell us more about you!!!! 🙂

  8. I am celebrating!!! A wonderful post – joyous, inclusive and spontaneous! I agree – there are a lot of friends and there are a lot more adventures…I’m ready!!

  9. Congratulations on your many awards, Sylvia! I love the stories about your scars; we all have them and each one does have a story! And 5 grandchildren? I can’t believe it! I always wondered where you originated from, considering that you go back and forth from South Africa to Florida. What took you to South Africa all those years ago?

We all love and appreciate your wonderful blog and your support and encouragement on our own blogs. It’s hard work and time consuming to follow and comment on blogs you enjoy, so your effort means a lot. And it’s great getting to know you through your funny and positive posts. Hugs xxx

  10. Now THAT is quite a virtual trophy cabinet, Sylvia! All thoroughly well deserved, I might add.

I always look forward to your next post when I can vicariously share in your travel experiences. You have a truly lovely blog..

  11. Wow, haven’t you done well. There are awards here I didn’t know existed. So very well deserved! It’s always such a pleasure to read your blog Sylvia and the friendship and generosity you extend to your fellow bloggers deserves a special award all by itself I think. 🙂 x

  12. Congratulations! It’s absolutely no surprise that you’ve been showered with all these awards. Your writing and your pictures are utterly delightful. I am no longer astonished when you add some new exotic location you’ve been to. I suspect you’ve been everywhere under the sun. 🙂
Thanks for the inspiration for clearing up the awards and calling an end to it. There are only so many hours in the day and I’m already spending far too many of them on the computer.
Wishing you all the very best for the holidays which are rolling toward us much too quickly.

    • Thank you, dear Gunta. I’ll certainly sleep better tonight now that I’ve been able to finally trash that pesky awards draft e-mail. A clean slate is a wonderful thing. 😆

  13. Well said and congratulations on your many achievements and awards. Your love for blogging shows through in you words and pictures. I enjoy reading your blog and always look forward to it.

  14. What a wonderful post! We all love you too, or at least I do. I love the seeing your little palm tree in my comment box. I love reading your posts and savoring the honesty and beauty you share with us. I live your beautiful pictures, and your zest for life. I can’t believe you have a 17 year old grandchild because you look so young! I look forward to blogging continuing into 2013. 🙂
