Weekly Photo Challenge: Renewal

This is a lovely challenge, and I see that many bloggers have posted beautiful nature pics for the theme.

To my mind, renewal means a bit of respite from the daily grind, and if one is very lucky, even a holiday.

Yesterday, we were on our way to Home Depot for the umpteenth time, to look at ‘stuff’ we need for redoing the kitchen. I spotted a Starbucks along the way, and we pulled in there for a bit of rest and renewal in the form of a cappuccino for hubby and a chai latte for me. I really don’t know why that chocolate brownie is sitting on my keyboard, but it seemed a shame not to eat it. πŸ˜€

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my home in South Africa. The summer holidays are coming up, and then the town and the beach will be swarming with work-weary holiday-makers, who have come down to the coast for a bit of well-earned renewal.

Moms will have time to sit under an umbrella and read, whilst dads will become little boys again, as they play sand castles with the kids.

Older couples may prefer to find renewal away from the crowds, and sit contemplating the waves in peace.

Dogs just love to run free along the beach. Their joy and exuberance just says it all.

Some companies send their employees down to the ocean for a few days, for a bit of renewal in the form of ‘Team Building’ activities.

At holiday time, I like to stay far away from the ‘madding crowd’, and find renewal just sitting at the top of our beach steps, watching the ever changing pattern of the waves.

What does the word “renewal” mean to you?

  5. Sorry I haven’t been around lately … 😦

Outstanding way to think about renewal. Usually thinking of home is about home sickness, but your renewal thoughts are counter to that.

Being away is one way of renewal, but vacations can bring renewal through hectic times. On the other hand, seeing you sitting on the bench reminds me that being away to relax is a renewal to the next level.

    Now about that brownie ….

    • No problem, Frank. It’s nice to know that fellow bloggers also have a life outside of blogging. πŸ˜€ Thanks for your thoughtful comment, and as for the brownie…….it’s long gone. πŸ˜†

  6. I LOVE this post πŸ˜€ I have enjoyed this stroll with you AD. Same as you, I find myself renewed best sitting under a tree…. πŸ˜‰

  7. Ahhhh, how serene! Your photos are lovely, and so relaxing to look at…as the wind blows and the temps drop to 37 degrees F here today! brrr… And, can you believe, I’m drinking a chai latte as I read this? πŸ™‚

  8. I’m pretty sure you don’t have to guess what my renewal is. It seems to pop up a lot in the blog (though I try not to include too many shots of the pup playing on the beach – she’s simply too fast to catch a good shot of her.) Having been through a few house “renewals” I wish for yours to be done soon and you’ll get to enjoy that new kitchen and all the rest.

    • Thanks so much, Gunta. I’m so used to hubby doing renovations that I’m sort of immune to the temporary upheaval. The kitchen units arrive tomorrow. Then the fun begins. πŸ™‚ Your little pup must absolutely love that you love going to the beach. πŸ™‚

  9. AD, you need to stop with the foodie pics, I’ve already gained more than enough weight from all the bundu bashin I’ve been doing, there’s no need to lead me into temptation at home as well πŸ˜‰
Everytime I go to the beach, I feel like a kid again. Somehow, I always find myself building sandcastles πŸ˜‰

    • 😦 Well, I’m up to my neck in renewal stuff. The new wall-oven is sitting in my lounge, waiting for the kitchen units to arrive. Today, the demolition fun begins. πŸ™‚

  10. You posted a chocolate brownie just as I got my coffee and I don’t have one here 😦 The day we can start downloading such things won’t be a day too soon in my book. A lovely post Sylvia. πŸ™‚

  11. Well, I’ll be one of the multitude going to the beach for a renewal break. Litchi (the dog) is really going to be happy (she thinks sand is the best toy ever invented). Luckily, with family in East London, I get to go somewhere where it is not too busy

  12. I love the photos of Umhlanga.. and you obviously have a wonderful view… I have a friend who has a house up that way and I love to sit on his stoep and watch the ships moving in and out of Durban harbour…
why have you a chocolate brownie on your keyboard.??? it should be eaten before the photo is taken…
