Wordless Wednesday: Gold to go

This ATM in Boca Raton, Florida, dispenses gold coins and bars weighing up to 8 ounces, at prices updated every 10 minutes based on the real-time spot price of gold. I didn’t see anyone using it, but I read that the Abu Dhabi machine is so popular that is has to be restocked every two days! 🙂

  3. That is Florida for you…I haven’t seen one on our visits there but it doesn’t surprise me. I don’t think the ATM would get much business here in New Hampshire. 🙂

  7. Wow! I have not seen that type of ATM before. How wild? (Is that why there is a lion cub on the front?) I wish they had a Gold Coin star machine where you could bring in your old nugget rings and chains and get money returned based on gold prices. 🙂

  11. Just wondering whether the coins come out in a net bag like those ones we buy to put in our Christmas Stockings … and I’m not talking about the Wolford kind you understand 😉

    • I would want the Wolford stockings as a bonus for using the machine. I may have to go back next time we’re in Florida. I’ll hang around to see what happens if anyone uses it. I could be there for weeks, so better I take my bed and some snacks with me. 😀

  20. I amazed at how callous all your commenters are. Not one person asked about the lion. I mean, who feeds it? For shame on all of you!

    • Hehehe. It’s only on screen for a few seconds at a time, so maybe it pops out for a snack occasionally. They’re probably wondering why some of the shoppers have gone missing. 😀

    • Yes, we get that too in America. There are sandwich-board people standing at the side of the road, advertising exactly that. Loads of pawn shops too. 🙂

  26. I would be a little nervous about getting some gold, wondering who was watching me, and how safe I would be. I would rather carry something less weighty, anyway. Thank goodness for plastic. The less I carry, the less I lay something down and forget it! 🙂 Great picture! 🙂

  32. Wow! I never knew there were machines dispensing the pure 24 carat stuff like this. Must be requiring huge security infrastructure. What could be the reason for this widely different off take of Gold between Florida and Abu Dhabi? What could be the compulsion for converting cash to Gold at AUH?

  33. I wouldn’t walk near an ATM machine like that.. it wouldn’t only swallow my card it would probably swallow me as well… can you imagine something like that here.??

    • Absolutely, Gunta. I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole, but it was a good photo opportunity. The security guards gave me a funny look though. I was worried they might confiscate my iPhone 😀
