If you’re feeling energetic you can climb the spiral stone staircase up into the South Tower of Cologne Cathedral. There are 533 steps to the observation deck, but the top of the spire at an altitude of 157.3 m, is accessible only via a ladder on the outside. There is no elevator. 🙂
Energetic se voet! More like suicidal.
I agree with you, footsy.
I’d love to climb up, the view would be well worth it!
Wow! I’ll be the photographer capturing the moment for posterity. 🙂
Quite a challenge, Sylvia! Count me in 😀
I’m impressed by your eagerness, Ese. 🙂
I am trying to mask my fear that way 😀
Pass. 🙂 I’d feel faint by the 12th step. Impressive architecture.
Yes that spire is very impressive, but you should see the whole building. 🙂
i’ll just pass, happy on the ground 😛
Me too. 🙂
Um, do they strap you in?
I have no idea how it works. I didn’t notice the ladder until we were outside again. The observation deck lower down has been fenced in, as there had been some suicides, so I imagine this climb must have some sort of safety measures. 🙂
I might do it, but would be terrified the whole time. And i would be cursing myself for doing it and then a few days later I would think: that was fun.
It would certainly make for good blog fodder. 🙂
Maybe another day AD. Busy washing carpets and no energy left to race you to the top. 😆 Great photo hon and thanks for sharing. 😀 *big hugs*
Hahaha. We’ll have to take a rain check on the race. Glad you enjoyed the idea though. 😀 Hugs back to you. xx
hehehe, glad to hear that. Was worried there for a minute. 😆
WOWW! I´m frightened of hights so this would be like a phobic therapy session for me 😉 // Maria 🙂
Hehehe……I’m just imagining this climb being used to cure people of their acrophobia. 🙂
Dave might, I would not!
I couldn’t watch.
That is not only for feeling energetic bur also feeling brave as well. It not for me for sure.
Yes “No Fear” would have to be the motto. 🙂
I was thinking I’d be right behind you, Ad, but I’m not so sure that’s a good idea? I mean, if it rains we’ll get very wet out there. 🙂
Absolutely. I wouldn’t want my hair to get wet, or blown around. 🙂
I’m with the majority here…. no way. Out of breath just looking at it, not to mention my growing fear of heights. (Why at this late stage?)
In my book, there could be no good reason to do this insane climb. 😯
Did you take the climb? I think I would.Then again – I’m a wee bit nuts 😉
No, I didn’t even know about it until I read on the internet. I don’t think I would, but hubby might be tempted. 🙂
My EYES are out of breath just looking at this!
Hahaha……..cute comment, Babsje. 🙂
Cute, but true! Wonder how many intrepid folks make that climb. 🙂
It would be interesting to find out, but I can’t find any info.
No survivors! That might be why. 🙂
Oooh, scary thought. 😕
I do believe I could still get up there. What a view it must be! When on top, though, one shouldn’t step back for a better shot …
I’m sure you could Col, but please don’t make me watch. Definitely no stepping back, MBH’s orders! 😀
Who’s going to be shooting the starting gun? 😉
I will, and you and Col can climb up there. 🙂
I was just thinking what fun it would be, actually!
A bit like your tree climbing episodes. 🙂
This is a lot higher, though!
Hmmmm…….just a little. 🙂
Challenge accepted Col!
I’m impressed. 🙂
My fear of heights is descending upon me! I imagined myself climbing that ladder. I’d have to pass no matter how energetic I felt. Great picture for evoking so much emotion without words ☺
Thanks, Janine. I’m not afraid of heights, but wouldn’t like to attempt that climb. 🙂
Oh my! That last bit is certainly not meant for mere mortals!!!
This is true, Madhu. Real Superman stuff. 🙂
Looks a trifle flimsy that ladder to me AD or am I just making an excuse 😉
That’s a very good reason, not just an excuse, Poppy. 🙂
Oh my Gosh… tell me you climbed that???
I wish I could tell you you that, bulldog, and seriously impress you, but I cannot tell a lie. 🙂
Thanks. But seriously, no thanks 😉
I will be content to watch the grandeur from the safety of terra firma if you don’t mind 😉
Thought so. 🙂
Ah…that’s ok. I’ll pass. Great shot though. 🙂
Thanks, Gemma. You don’t surprise me. If you won’t even fly in a plane, you definitely won’t climb this ladder. 🙂
You know me too well, ad. 😉
You give too much away, Gemma. 🙂
Hmmmmm. Need to cut back 😉
Whoa!! Definitely not for the faint of heart. 🙂
That’s for sure, LuAnn. 🙂
Funny… I am afraid of heights but last night I dreamed I was climbing up ladder after ladder after ladder…. maybe it was this tower!
What a nightmare! 😯
There is no way….
Me neither. 🙂
My heart is already palpitating…goodness.
Hiya, Frizz. Nice pic. 🙂
Oh, no! Just seeing things like that gives me the willies! I cannot fathom people who willingly go up there for a living or for thrills. I’m happiest when my feet are planted firmly on the ground, thank you very much. 🙂
It is really ‘heart in the mouth’ stuff, isn’t it? 🙂
Looks a little too scary for me, ad 🙂
Me too. 🙂
Okay. Please don’t wear a dress as I may let you win 😉 Ralph xox 😀
Ralph, I wouldn’t dream of distracting your attention. You might fall. 🙂
I always fall for the right woman 😉
In my young days I would have done it, now in my wise days I will keep my feet on terra firma 🙂
I wonder if there’s a safety harness. 😕
i think i will look from the ground thanks ad!
I’m with you, Christine. 🙂
Very scary AD 😯
I agree. 🙂
