New England in The Fall, for Jake’s theme.

Jake’s Sunday Post theme this week, is ‘Autumn’, and although it’s Springtime here in South Africa, I remembered that I have some lovely photos taken a few years ago, on a visit to New England in the Fall. This was something I’d always wanted to experience, ever since a friend who used to live there, told me about the beautiful colours of the foliage to be seen at this time of year. It was in October, some time around Columbus day, and the pumpkins were out in force.

Porches were already decked out for Halloween.

We travelled around Vermont, staying in various B&B’s along the way. This one is ‘Mapletown Inn’ in the historic hamlet of Mapletown, on route 7. It dates back to 1810, and was used in the mid 19th century as a safe house for black slave fugitives who were fleeing to a better life in Canada.

The scenery was spectacular, and it’s hard to choose which pics I love the most.

I loved the movie, ‘The Bridges of Madison County’, starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, and have also read the book, so was absolutely thrilled to see some of these wonderful covered bridges for myself.

I said that I didn’t know which pics I like the best, but at the end of the final day of our trip, we had the most wonderful photo opportunity, with the sun showing its face after a cloudy rainy day. Just before sunset, it came out to play, together with a stunning rainbow.

What more could I wish for?

Can you spot the Bennington Obelisk in this last photo? It’s a battle monument, and at 93 metres, is the tallest structure in Vermont.

I can tell you that this was the best time I’ve ever had in Autumn. So much beauty, and an American road trip which I’ll never forget.

  1. I love the colours, I’ve been to Vermont in the winter but I would love to see the fall colours.

  2. I love these pictures, especially the first one. We don’t have seasons down in Southern California. We have sun 350 days a year where it’s hot and hotter. Then it rains for a few days. 🙂

    • Thanks, TG. We also don’t have much change between the seasons in my part of South Africa. Sometimes I wish we did, and other times, I’m glad we don’t. 🙂

  3. Oh…my own region now. Our house looks like a sister to that house with the decked out porch. I have not been to Vermont during the fall that’s why I am really pleased to see your beautiful photos. That rainbow was spectacular.

  4. Wonderful photographs, fascinating. One of these bridges, I remember from a film Merly Streep and Clint Eastwood, I think… Thank you dear AD, love, nia

  5. What wonderful pictures. I’ve heard great things about this natural wonder too. Maybe I’ll make it one day… 🙂

  6. I made a point of getting 2 trees that changes colour in autumn – it’s just gorgeous 😉
The rainbow pic is quite breathtaking AD – New England looks to be a place worth visiting 😉

    Thanks for sharing

  8. I am still wanting to do that trip…eventually. Love the B&B”s, pumpkins, bridges and of course the last two of the rainbows. Worth the rainy day. Lovely reminder of autumn.

  9. Fabulous pictures AD especially the second last one! We did a road trip through New England in the spring and on Memorial Day weekend we were in the little town of Lake George upstate New York. The parade through the town was wonderful, with every section of the population taking part from kindergarten children to the fire and police departments. I remember all the cemetries bedecked with American flags and so well kept. We covered Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island over a period of 10 days – wonderful memories, thanks for bringing them back to mind. 🙂

  10. I absolutely love that picture of the rainbow – spectacular!

Those pumpkins are awesome and I loved the book and movie The Bridges of Madison County as well.

You’ve captured the essence of autumn beautifully here 😀

  11. Hi Ad,
What beautiful pictures! Fall in the States just somehow seems more beautiful there and the spirit they have in all the events such as Halloween, Thanksgiving etc is great and they go to a lot of trouble in decorating and celebrating. The Americans are very patriotic and I wish we could have the same thing here!

    Regards,
    GAIL

  12. Fall in New England is stunning. Your pictures are gorgeous and make me really homesick. Next fall, I will be at home in Virginia for sure. My birthday is on October 25, and every year of my life, I’ve had the most beautiful birthday you can imagine!

  13. Yep,Fall is definately beautifukl up this way (Virginia/Tennessee isn’t exactly New Englamd, but we’re close enough to share the weather and geographics 😉 ).

      • Despite some emotional pain I have been really avoiding (ok,some pretty intense) up until last night…it’s going really good, thank you 🙂 Look for a much more…consistant or stable me beginning today,as I get some closure on some things 😀

  14. Oh wow, makes me think Sleepy Hollow, especially that bridge! Any minute now the headless horseman will pop out and join you for a cup of tea before he gets back to nerving the local villagers?
